USB Stick Error: You Need to Format Disk in Drive before You Can Use It

User1: I can’t access the files on my 16GB HP USB stick since when I insert the stick into a USB port of my computer, windows says you need to format the disk in drive before you can use it. If I select "yes", will I lose all my files on my USB stick? If I click no", how can I access the stick to see all the files? I have more than 3 years of valuable files on the USB stick. Can somebody show me how to restore the files?

User2: I can see my USB stick shown as drive G: when I connect it to my laptop. However, my laptop refuses me to access the stick to see the files. Windows says disk in drive G: is not formatted do you want to format it now. How can I fix the not formatted error on my USB stick so that I can restore all the files on the stick?
