External Hard Drive Says File or Directory Corrupted or Unreadable

User1: When I connect my 250GB Toshiba external hard drive to my computer, it is shown as a removable drive I: but some files on this external hard drive are inaccessible. As long as I try to open those files, a windows dialog box will come out to say: the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable. I need help to access those files. Is there any clue?

User2: I tried to access my external hard drive but failed. It shows the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable. Then I tried to take the external hard drive out of the case and inserted another external hard drive, but I got the same error message. What can I do to solve this problem?
